Reverend Monsignor John Alan McCaffrey was born November 16, 1947 to Robert T. McCaffrey and Yvette Tardif McCaffrey in Plymouth, New Hampshire. Monsignor John is the third of four children. The McCaffreys were a military family residing in homes and attending school all over the world until finally John graduated from Killeen High School in Killeen, Texas in 1965. Colonel McCaffrey was transferred to Florida, so John followed and attended Oklaoosa Walton Junior College in Niceville, Florida in which he received his Associate Arts Degree in 1967. Then, John attended and graduated from Florida State University in Social Work with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1969. Upon graduation from Florida State, John worked the American Red Cross at Ft. Bliss, Texas and 13 months in Vietnam.

John's vocation to the priesthood grew much stronger while serving with the military personnel in Southeast Asia. When his duty in Vietnam ended, John returned to the United States and resigned in order to go to the seminary and prepare for the priesthood. In 1976, he received his Masters of Theology Degree from St. Meinrad School of Theology in St. Meinrad, Indiana. On June 5, 1976 John Alan McCaffrey was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Austin. An elementary school was purchased from Bryan I.S.D. An early learning program for three year olds, a pre-school and a high school have been added to St. Joseph School System. The Million Dollar Endowment was formed for the school under his leadership to match the funds donated by Msgr. Sylvester Fuchs. Another cemetery was also established - Mt. Calvary Cemetery at Smetana - and a second mausoleum was added to Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Bryan.

In 2001, Rev. John A. McCaffrey was honored with the title Monsignor by Pope John Paul II. Furthermore, St. Joseph Church and School purchased Central Baptist Church of Bryan to move and expand the middle school and high school. In 2002, under Msgr. McCaffrey pastorate, the Millennium Stained Glass Windows were completed at no cost to the parish, as all funds were donated in memory of or in honor to someone.
